Menopause is the time in a woman's life when the cyclical function of the ovaries and menstruation ceases. Menopause begins at the end of the last menstrual period. However, this fact is only confirmed later, when there has been no menstrual flow for at least 12 months.

The average age at which menopause begins is around 50, but menopause also commonly appears in women as young as 40. Regular menstrual cycles may continue until menopause, but generally the last periods have variable duration and flow. Progressively, fewer and fewer cycles are accompanied by the release of an egg.

During the period before menopause (technically called climacteric, but more recently called perimenopause) there may be no symptoms or they may be mild, moderate, or severe. Hot flashes affect 75% of women. During a hot flash, the skin, especially on the head and neck, becomes red and hot, and sweating can be intense. Most women have hot flashes for more than a year, and between 25% and 50% experience them for more than five years. They last between 30 seconds and 5 minutes and may be followed by chills. Night sweats disrupt sleep and worsen fatigue and irritability. Sometimes, women may feel nauseous, have a tingling sensation (pins and needles), and feel their heart beating, which seems to palpitate strongly. They may also suffer from urinary incontinence, inflammation of the bladder and vagina, and pain during intercourse due to vaginal dryness. Sometimes, a painful sensation in the muscles and joints arises.

Osteoporosis (severe bone thinning) is the main health problem caused by menopause. During the first 5 years after menopause, between 3% and 5% of bone mass is lost per year, and thereafter, between 1% and 2% per year.

The incidence of cardiovascular diseases increases more rapidly after menopause, due to the decrease in oestrogen.
