Menopause is the moment in a woman's life when the cyclical function of the ovaries and menstruation cease. Menopause begins at the end of the last menstrual period. However, this is only confirmed later, when there is no menstrual flow for at least 12 months.

The average age at which menopause begins is around 50 years, but menopause also commonly occurs in women as young as 40. Regular menstrual cycles may continue until menopause, but the last periods generally vary in length and amount of flow. Progressively, fewer and fewer cycles are accompanied by the release of an egg.

During the period before menopause (technically called climacteric, but more recently called perimenopause) there may be no symptoms or they may be mild, moderate or severe.
